KUCHING: Long-standing flood problems in Batu Kawa are expected to be significantly reduced once a series of flood mitigation projects worth more than RM200 million are fully completed.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said several flood mitigation initiatives are already underway, with some completed and others currently being implemented to safeguard thousands of residents in the area.

He said that four major flood mitigation projects are being carried out around Batu Kawa, benefiting approximately 4,000 residents, particularly in flood-prone neighbourhoods.

“In Desa Wira, the first phase of the project worth about RM20 million has already been completed, while the final phase costing around RM36 million has begun with contractors already on site,” he said when met by the media after visiting the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at Dewan Stapok here today (Mar 11).

Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, explained that the projects not only involve improving drainage systems but also the construction of retention ponds to manage excess rainwater during heavy downpours.

“A total of four dry retention ponds are being built in Batu Kawa with a combined area of about 16 acres. When heavy rain occurs and water levels rise, these ponds will store the excess water before releasing it in a controlled manner,” he said.

He added that the final phase of the project also includes the construction of a three-kilometre embankment to prevent river water from overflowing into nearby low-lying villages.

“If the embankment is not built, river water will overflow into the villages when water levels increase. In addition, three water pumps will be installed to pump water out from the retention ponds,” he said.

He noted that flood management today requires more comprehensive planning compared to the past due to increasing rainfall and higher water volumes.

“In the past, building drains might have been enough, but now the amount of water is too large. Without retention ponds, rivers cannot accommodate the flow of water at one time,” he explained.

At the same time, he expressed appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for supporting the funding of the projects.

He also thanked Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof for his role at the federal level in supporting large-scale flood management efforts.

Dr Sim further revealed that the Federal Government has approved a RM2.4 billion project to construct a Sarawak River bypass channel that will divert about 60 per cent of the river’s water flow.

“Once completed, it is expected to help reduce flood risks in villages along the Sarawak River and benefit surrounding areas, including Batu Kawa,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the completion of all ongoing flood mitigation projects will finally resolve the long-standing flood issues affecting residents in Batu Kawa.
