KUCHING: Efforts are still underway to improve the water supply for residents in the Tanjong Datu state constituency with the implementation of several upgrading projects funded under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).
According to the GKCDA special administrative officer, Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, three key projects, worth a total of RM15 million, had been identified by Tanjung Datu assemblyman, Azizul Annuar Adenan, to enhance the water supply system in the area and ensure residents enjoy a more reliable and efficient supply of clean and treated water.
He noted that RM5 million had been allocated to replace the old pipes, upgrade the existing undersized pipes, and construct a new gravity feed dam and pipeline for Telok Serabang and Telok Melano (new source) and associated work for Sematan sub-district.
He said the project has been awarded and should be completed by now.
He added that another RM5 million has also been allocated for the proposed pipeline extension project under Tanjong Datu and improvement works at Lundu water treatment plant.
“Azizul had also set aside RM5 million for the replacement of old pipe and upgrading of existing undersized pipes for 10 areas and associated work for Lundu District (construction of Damper Dam at raw water intake station (Gunung Gading for Lundu Water Treatment Plant), as well as to rehabilitate and or build some facilities.
“This project has been tendered in out in October last year,” he said.
Ik Pahon said some of the existing pipelines in several locations in Tanjung Datu are already old and undersized, which affects the efficiency of water distribution, especially during periods of high demand.
With the installation of bigger pipes, he hoped the flow and pressure of treated water will be significantly improved, allowing more households to receive a consistent supply.
He said the upgrading works are part of the Sarawak government’s broader initiative to strengthen basic infrastructure in rural and semi-rural areas through the local assemblyman under GKCDA.
The Tanjong Datu constituency, located in the Lundu district, has seen steady growth in recent years, making reliable infrastructure such as clean water supply increasingly important for residents and businesses.
Ik Pahon stressed that the project reflects the Sarawak Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life of the people by ensuring access to essential utilities.
Once completed, the upgrading works are expected to greatly enhance the overall efficiency of the water supply system and provide long-term benefits to communities across the constituency.
