RIO DE JANEIRO: Despite a slight improvement in his health, jailed former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro remains in the intensive care unit of a hospital with pneumonia, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

“His condition has stabilised clinically, and his kidney function has improved, although inflammation levels in his blood have risen again,” the news portal G1 quoted from a medical bulletin issued by Hospital DF Star in the capital, Brasília.

Doctors have extended his course of antibiotics. No date for his discharge has been given as yet.

The former president, who is serving a prison sentence of more than 27 years for an attempted coup, was admitted on Friday after suffering from nausea, a high fever and chills during the night.

Tests revealed bacterial bronchopneumonia, a form of pneumonia.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, a senator and likely future presidential candidate, made serious allegations.

“They are deliberately putting Bolsonaro’s life at risk. There is no longer any reason why the law should not be applied, and Bolsonaro transferred to house arrest on humanitarian grounds,” he wrote on the social media platform X.

Bolsonaro’s defence team had previously made repeated attempts to have his prison sentence converted to house arrest on health grounds. However, the Supreme Court has so far denied such applications. – BERNAMA-dpa
