KUCHING: The Serian District Council (MDS) is set to roll out a series of tourism development projects under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

The development projects are aimed at transforming the district into an eco-tourism destination in Sarawak.

Council chairman Datuk Peter Minos said the initiatives, to be implemented in stages between 2026 and 2027, will focus on enhancing Serian’s rich natural assets, including mountains, waterfalls, rivers, caves and hot springs.

Among the flagship projects is the upgrading of the popular Ranchan Pool, where improvements in facilities and accessibility are expected to enhance visitor experience and safety.

Minos said RM10 million had been allocated to renovate and improve the Rancang pool itself, with the hope to turn it into a key attraction for both local and foreign visitors.

Another key project involves the Silabur Cave in Kampung Silabur, which will be opened up and improved to cater for cave exploration enthusiasts.

He said the Silabur Cave near Mongkos is a big and beautiful cave, already visited by many people including foreigners but nothing organised yet.

“So we have about RM10 million allocation to do the access road, build a few chalets, public toilet and canteen so people can stay there because it is quite a distant from Serian.

Another flagship project is the development of Bung Sadong into an eco-tourism attraction.

Minos said the project, estimated to cost about RM13.5 million, will include the construction of access roads and basic infrastructure to support hiking and outdoor activities.

It is expected to position Bung Sadong alongside other well-known highland attractions in the state.

Minos said efforts are also underway to upgrade the Panchor Dayak hot spring into a wellness and leisure destination, while Riih Daso Lake is earmarked to be transformed into a recreational park and fishing hub suitable for family outings.

The council is also focusing on river-based eco-tourism through the development of the PesangRiver area, offering nature and recreational activities for visitors.

In addition, a new product is being planned at Kampung Tarat Mawang, where a 200-feet-high waterfall will be developed into a major attraction complete with accommodation, public amenities and food outlets.

Minos said the council is going to implementabout eight tourism projects under the GKCDA framework, all of which are designed to stimulate local economic growth and create income opportunities for rural communities.

“These projects will not only enhance Serian’sappeal to both domestic and international tourists, but also generate business opportunities for local residents,” he said.

He added that the long-term vision is to position Serian as a unique eco-tourism hub, capitalisingon its landscapes and cultural heritage.

With strong backing from GKCDA and the Sarawak government, the district is poised to emerge as one of Sarawak’s tourism destinations in the coming years, contributing to the broader development of the Greater Kuching region.
