KOTA SAMARAHAN: Two student teams from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Dato’ Mohd Musa made the district proud by clinching two gold medals at the International Science, Technology and Engineering Expo 2026 (iSTEEx 26).
The international innovation competition, organised by the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) was held at DeTAR PUTRA on Thursday (Apr 9).
SK Dato’ Mohd Musa emerged as one of the most outstanding primary schools in the field of science and technology innovation, competing against 34 primary and 36 secondary schools from across Malaysia.
The first gold medal was secured by Team R2CB for their “Remote Control Cleaning Boat” invention.
Designed as a response to water pollution, the small electric-powered boat is built to collect floating debris such as plastic bottles and food containers from rivers, lakes and ponds.
The innovation, mentored by teacher Ismail Sumanteri, features a front-loading collection mechanism that allows for efficient waste removal without disturbing the aquatic ecosystem.
It aims to raise environmental awareness while serving as a potential small-scale solution for community water maintenance.
The school’s second gold was won by Team Edu Monster for their digital educational game titled “Measure Monster”.
Developed specifically for Year 3 pupils, the interactive application uses gamification to help students grasp mathematical measurement concepts.
Mentored by teachers Hazilah Rashid and Izzah Iwani Najwa Issnu, the latest version of the app is now available on Android devices, supporting inclusive 21st-century digital learning.
Headmaster, Issnu Dollah, praised the students’ achievements, noting that it was the result of the school’s continuous efforts to foster a culture of innovation from an early age.
“We are very proud of this achievement. It proves that primary school students are capable of competing on an international stage when given the right exposure, guidance and support,” he said in a statement.
He added that such innovation-based learning not only boosts academic performance but also builds social awareness, problem-solving skills and technological literacy.
