KUCHING: China has reaffirmed strong bilateral ties with Sarawak and pledged continued support for the state’s push to achieve developed status by 2030.

The commitment was highlighted during a courtesy call on the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, at 10 am at Astana Negeri, Petra Jaya today (April 13).

The visit by the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Xing Weiping, also served as an official introduction of him as the new Consul General, while further strengthening the long-standing diplomatic and economic ties between Sarawak and China.

During the meeting, both parties exchanged views on various strategic areas including digital economy, renewable energy, artificial intelligence (AI), green economy, and agricultural development, particularly Sarawak’s efforts to become a major rice producer in the country.

Xing expressed admiration for Sarawak’s rapid development, political stability, and harmony among its multi-ethnic society, and reaffirmed China’s commitment to remain a significant development partner in supporting Sarawak’s aspiration to achieve developed state status by 2030.

In addition, Wan Junaidi also shared insights from his experience at the federal level, including official visits to China that highlighted the country’s rapid transformation since the 1990s.

He also reflected on the historical diplomatic and trade relations between Malaysia and China established during the tenure of Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

The couple also expressed their appreciation for the visit and hoped that the strong diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China would continue to be further strengthened for the mutual benefit of both nations.
