MARUDI: The implementation of the Miri–Marudi–Mulu (Kuala Melinau) and Long Lama–Long Panai (MMMLL) road project under Phase 1 of Kick-off Project 2 (KOP 2), along with rural bridge upgrades, is set to strengthen connectivity in the interior areas of Baram.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the rollout of the second MMMLL package reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to translating development plans into tangible outcomes.

“We are witnessing the launch of the second MMMLL package, proving that the government’s commitment goes beyond rhetoric and is realised through projects that directly benefit the people.

“This initiative is an important step towards expanding facilities in a fair and inclusive manner for all Sarawakians, including those in Baram,” he said at the project’s groundbreaking ceremony here today (Apr 14).

He said the KOP 2 component involves the construction of a new 6.25-kilometre road from Simpang Puyot to Sungai Kalijau, built to JKR R3 standards, as part of the overall RM3.8 billion MMMLL project, which is expected to be completed within 48 months.

Upon completion, the project is expected to benefit about 404,679 residents in Miri, particularly in Baram, by improving access to education, healthcare services and economic opportunities, including tourism and commercial activities.

At the same time, the state government has approved 50 projects under the Rural Bridge Transformation Programme in the Mulu and Telang Usan constituencies, with allocations exceeding RM80 million.

In Mulu, 22 projects have been implemented with an allocation of RM44.33 million, covering new construction, repairs and completed works.

Meanwhile, in Telang Usan, RM36.14 million has been allocated to replace and repair 28 deteriorated timber bridges, with projects at various stages including construction, repair, tender and design.

Uggah said the projects will significantly improve mobility and rural connectivity, including reducing travel time from Miri to Mulu from about nine hours to just two hours.

He also urged the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) to expedite implementation to ensure completion before the monsoon season in November.
