KUCHING: Sarawak is adopting a proactive and forward-looking approach to safeguard its economy amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and the potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that the region remains one of the most critical hubs for global oil and gas supply, and any disruption serves as a reminder of how fragile global energy supply can be.
“Any disruption, whether through conflict, shipping constraints, or geopolitical instability, has immediate consequences on global energy prices.
“When energy prices rise, the effects are not isolated. They cascade across the global economy, impacting transportation costs, including insurance costs, food prices, manufacturing, and ultimately the cost of living.
“No country is immune to these pressures,” he said at the Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) 30th anniversary dinner at Sheraton Kuching on Tuesday (Apr 14).
He said Sarawak is taking proactive measures to ensure its resources are utilised strategically to generate long-term economic value.
“First, we are strengthening our position in the gas industry, not just as an exporter, but as a processor and value creator.
“Through the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, we are ensuring that our resources are utilised strategically,” he said.
Second, the state is accelerating its transition towards renewable and cleaner energy, including hydrogen and other green energy solutions.
“These efforts are not only about sustainability, but also about energy security through diversified energy sources.
“That is why we are developing biomass, including biochar,” he added.
Abang Johari also stressed that the government is committed to ensuring the benefits of Sarawak’s resources are translated into tangible support for the people, particularly in cushioning the impact of rising costs.
“God willing, by Thursday, I will announce assistance for the people of Sarawak.
“This includes targeted aid, infrastructure development, and economic programmes aimed at maintaining affordability and improving quality of life,” he said.
He added that continued investments in industrial growth, job creation and income opportunities are crucial to ensure the people are not only protected from global shocks but also empowered to thrive.
“In this context, Bintulu Port plays a critical role. It is not just a port, but a strategic asset in ensuring that Sarawak remains connected, competitive and resilient in the face of global uncertainties.”
