MIRI: The Civil Defence Force (APM) operations centre in Sibu has been proposed for an upgrade to improve service delivery and operational efficiency.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak), Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, said the proposal takes into account the area’s frequent exposure to disaster risks.
“APM plays a crucial role in assisting communities during emergencies such as floods and fires, and efforts to upgrade its operations centre and existing facilities should be prioritised to strengthen its overall effectiveness,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after visiting the Miri APM Operations Control Centre here today (April 16).
Mustapha added that the visit provided an opportunity to assess the agency’s level of preparedness in dealing with disasters in the state.
He added that the commitment and dedication shown by Sarawak APM in carrying out rescue operations, including in remote areas, reflected the agency’s important role in safeguarding public safety.
“APM’s approach in striving to save every life, regardless of location, is commendable, as every individual rescued has the potential to contribute to the nation in the future,” he said.
He also called for greater participation from volunteers and the implementation of community awareness programmes, particularly in high-risk areas.
“These training and awareness programmes are important to ensure that villagers are able to take basic early action during emergencies while awaiting the arrival of rescue teams,” he said.
On challenges in Sabah and Sarawak, he said the vast geographical landscape and infrastructure limitations remain key factors affecting operational effectiveness.
“Continuous efforts are being made to optimise the use of existing assets while seeking additional resources,” he added.
