KUCHING: Sarawak’s role as host of the ODEA World Chinese Tennis Federation (WCTF) Team Championship underscores its growing reputation as a hub for international sporting and cultural exchange, bringing together teams from across the global overseas Chinese community.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the championship reflects unity, friendship and cultural connection, as it gathers participants from diverse backgrounds through a shared passion for tennis.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting Chew Yew at a welcoming and fellowship dinner on Thursday (Apr 16), Abdul Karim extended a warm welcome to all participants, noting that the event has attracted 24 teams and over 200 players, along with their families, from around the world.
“We are indeed honoured to host teams who have travelled from near and far, representing a strong global overseas Chinese tennis community,” he said.
Participants in this year’s championship include teams from China, Australia, the United States, Macau, Singapore, Japan, Mongolia, New Zealand and Malaysia.
Abdul Karim said that the championship goes beyond competition, describing it as a celebration of heritage and unity that bridges generations and cultures.
“Events such as this not only strengthen sporting ties but also foster cultural connections and lifelong friendships,” he added.
He also highlighted Sarawak’s rich cultural diversity, warm hospitality and abundance of natural attractions, encouraging participants to take the opportunity to explore the state beyond the courts.
Additionally, Abdul Karim commended the organisers and partners, including the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA), its president Datuk Patrick Liew, and World Chinese Tennis Federation chairman Yu Jun Tong, for their efforts in making the championship a success.
“Your commitment has made this championship a significant platform connecting the global tennis community,” he said.
He then wished all players success and urging them to compete with sportsmanship, respect and excellence.
Among those present at the event were Deputy Minister of Public Health and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping.
