MIRI: Two crocodile traps were handed over at the RCJV Kuala Baram project site today (April 17) to help manage human-wildlife conflict and improve safety for nearby communities and workers.

The traps were contributed by RISDA Plantation Sdn Bhd (RPSB) and the Miri Port Authority to support mitigation measures against crocodile threats in Kuala Baram, where residents and fishermen regularly rely on riverine areas for their daily activities.

“This initiative reflects a practical collaboration between industry stakeholders and wildlife authorities in addressing human-wildlife conflict while strengthening safety measures for communities and workers in Kuala Baram,” said Japanie Bujang, Deputy General Manager (Management) of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), reading a speech text on behalf of SFC General Manager, Abang Arabi Abang Aimran.

He added that the initiative also demonstrated how development efforts could proceed alongside environmental conservation in line with the spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’.

The contribution further underscores industry commitment to improving safety at project sites, ensuring personnel can carry out their duties with greater confidence while supporting efforts to reduce risks linked to crocodile encounters.

SFC reaffirmed its role not only as a regulatory body but also as a strategic partner working with stakeholders through scientific approaches to safeguard both community wellbeing and wildlife sustainability.

The public was also encouraged to use the ‘Sarawak Croc Watch’ mobile application to report crocodile sightings and support monitoring efforts across the state.
