KUCHING: A breakthrough by local scientists identifying a palm oil-derived component for aircraft fuel production has opened new prospects for Sarawak’s role in sustainable aviation fuel development.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said researchers at the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) had identified palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) as a key feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
He said the development positions Sarawak to produce SAF locally, including for use by the state’s planned airline, AirBorneo.
“Today, our scientists in Sarawak have identified a material from palm oil known as PFAD.
“This PFAD will be used to produce aircraft fuel. Our AirBorneo will use aircraft fuel produced in Gedong,” he said at the Gedong District Aidilfitri gathering held at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on Friday night (April 17).
Abang Johari, who is also Gedong assemblyman, said the discovery strengthens Sarawak’s standing in green technology and alternative energy while maximising the value of its natural resources.
He added that commercialisation of technology-based downstream products could further stimulate the state’s economy and support continued infrastructure development.
He also revealed that Japan is expected to expand algae cultivation, signalling additional opportunities in future bio-resource development.
During the event, Abang Johari presented certificates confirming extensions of service to community leaders in Gedong district and certificates of appreciation to former community leaders in recognition of their contributions to local communities.
