KUCHING: The World Thinking Day celebration at the Sarawak level became a meaningful occasion as its 100th anniversary was marked with an emphasis on the value of friendship as the foundation of global unity.

The celebration, organised by the Sarawak branch of the Girl Guides Association Malaysia (PPPM), was officiated by its patron, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi today (April 18).

The event was also attended by Branch Chief Commissioner, Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, Deputy Chief Commissioner Annie Sim, Chief Commissioner Ruth Sibat, as well as approximately 230 Girl Guide members and leaders from across the state.

In her speech, Dayang Morliah said this year’s celebration is especially significant as it marks a century of World Thinking Day, which has been observed since 1926.

According to her, throughout this period, the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts movement has successfully built strong bonds of friendship across national borders, cultures and generations.

“Friendship is the foundation of the strength of this movement in nurturing individuals who are courageous, principled and committed to making the world a better and safer place,” she said.

Dayang Morliah explained that this year’s celebration focuses on four main areas: celebrating 100 years of friendship, appreciating history and tradition, strengthening global connections, and translating the value of friendship into action.

She added that in conjunction with this historic celebration, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) has prepared a special activity pack to enable members to take part in meaningful activities and earn the 100th anniversary World Thinking Day commemorative badge.

She further noted that the Sarawak branch currently has about 13,000 members at all levels and continues to actively implement various development programmes, including leadership courses, workshops and ongoing training.
