KUCHING: Kuching City FC has reached a historic milestone when they qualified for the Malaysia Cup final for the very first time after beating Selangor FC on a 2-1 aggregate when they won 1-0 in the second semifinal leg at State Stadium here today.
Kuching City FC was the only team to score in today’s match when Petrus Shitembi found the net in the 30th minute.
Things got worse for Selangor FC in the second half when they had to play with 10 men after team captain, Mohammad Safuwan Baharudin, was sent off for obstructing a goal based on a review by the Video Assistant Referee, and then lost yet another player, Muhammad Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi, 11 minutes later because of a harsh foul, leaving the visiting team with only nine men on the field.
Still, Kuching City could not capitalise on the advantage, and the match ended 1-0, but it was enough to send Kuching City through to its fateful first final of the Malaysia Cup.
Defending champions, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), will be waiting for Kuching FC after they beat Kuala Lumpur City FC on an 8-1 aggregate.
The Malaysia Cup final will be played on May 23 at Bukit Jalil National Stadium. – BERNAMA
