SERIAN: Efforts to widen access to higher education took centre stage at SMK Serian as a Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) roadshow was rolled out during the school’s PIBG Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday (April 18).

The programme was officiated by Bukit Simuja assemblyman, John Ilus, who said such initiatives could help ease the financial burden on families and urged parents and students to fully utilise the opportunities provided.

Adviser to the Sarawak Premier on Education, Datuk Amar Michael Manyin Jawong, said outreach efforts like this are crucial in ensuring parents and students at the grassroots level are well-informed about available education pathways.

Organised by the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA), the programme aimed to raise awareness on the opportunities offered under FTES, including its benefits and application process.

Manyin commended the initiative, noting that bringing information directly to communities helps bridge gaps in awareness and enables families to make informed decisions about their children’s future.

A comprehensive briefing was delivered by Dr Les Met, who outlined the scheme’s objectives and application procedures, while encouraging parents to actively support their children in pursuing tertiary education.

SMK Serian’s Principal, Rozita Zin, described the selection of the school as the first venue for the roadshow as timely, particularly in supporting students’ academic planning.

PIBG Chairman, Mali Tahel, also expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a meaningful opportunity for the school community to engage directly with education stakeholders.

According to a press statement, the roadshow marks the beginning of DBNA’s broader outreach across Sarawak to promote awareness and accessibility of the FTES.

Also present were DBNA’s Vice-President, Dr Clarence Jerry, and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak academic, Prof. Dr Andrew Ragai, who is also the President of the Bidayuh Graduate Association, while District Education Officer, Bunsie Tunton, was represented by Nor Elieena Iwani Abdullah.
