MIRI: Police here arrested a 22-year-old man, seized 12 motorcycles, and issued 70 summonses during an overnight crackdown on illegal street racing and reckless riding.
The operations, codenamed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’, was carried out between 11:00 pm on Saturday and 5:00 am this morning (April 19) by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, with support from Miri Central Police Station.
Enforcement teams targeted several known hotspots, including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Pujut, Jalan Tanjong Lobang, Jalan Tudan, the Miri By-Pass and the Marina area, following complaints of dangerous riding and late-night gatherings.
Miri District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, said 61 individuals and 25 motorcycles were stopped and inspected.
“Seventy summonses were issued for various offences, including expired road tax, absence of registration plates, use of non-compliant number plates, riding without a valid licence, illegal exhaust modifications, and missing side mirrors,” he said.
The 22-year-old suspect was detained under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly performing dangerous stunts while riding. The offence carries heavy penalties upon conviction.
Police also seized 12 motorcycles under Section 60 of the same Act for further action.
Farhan said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to curb street hooliganism and improve road safety, particularly during late-night hours.
He urged motorists and riders to comply with traffic regulations and refrain from unlawful modifications or activities that could endanger lives.
“Road users must not gather along roadsides in ways that obstruct traffic, cause congestion or create public disturbance,” he said, adding that negligence on the road puts both the individual and others at risk.
Police said similar operations will continue as part of efforts to maintain traffic discipline and public order in the city.
