KUCHING: A 35-year-old man was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today (Apr 20) after pleading guilty to possessing methamphetamine hidden in a cigarette box.
Awg Azrul Awg Ayub admitted the charge before Magistrate Nur Syaheeqa Nadzwa Radzali.
He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction.
The offence was committed at about 12 pm on Feb 6 at a housing estate near Petra Jaya, where he was found in possession of 0.009g of methamphetamine.
According to the facts of the case, personnel from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) of the Kuching District Police Headquarters arrested him on suspicion of drug possession.
A physical inspection uncovered a cigarette box containing a transparent plastic packet filled with crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine.
The seized substance was later confirmed by the Chemistry Department Malaysia to be methamphetamine weighing 0.009g.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly, while the accused was unrepresented.
