SIBU: Lions International District 308-A2 is set to host the three-day Asia Pacific Lions Leaders Summit (APLLS) 2026 here from July 17.
It is expected to draw more than 700 International Lions.
Organising chairperson, Datuk Betty Wong said the prestigious event has received an overwhelming response, attracting registrations from Lions leaders representing 17 countries and special administrative regions.
Adding prestige to the event, she pointed out that Lions International President Mark S. Lyon of the United States, who leads a global membership of approximately 1.4 million Lions, will attend the summit together with his wife.
“Their presence in Sibu for this three-day gathering will undoubtedly elevate the significance of the occasion.
“To date, registered participants come from the United States, China, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Cambodia, Singapore, Brunei, Mongolia, Bhutan, Guam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Current registrations have already exceeded 600 participants,” she told the media here Tuesday (April 21).
According to Wong, the organising committee is targeting a total attendance of 700 to 750 participants.
A special highlight of the opening ceremony, she added, will be the “Red Carpet Star Walk of Fame”, where Lions leaders from various countries and districts will appear in their respective national or traditional costumes and make their way along the red carpet, showcasing the rich cultural diversity of the Asia Pacific region.
“In view of venue capacity and overall programme arrangements, the committee has decided to cap participation at 750 Lions leaders to ensure the smooth running of the event and to provide all delegates with a quality summit experience.
“As part of the preparations, we have recently paid a courtesy call on Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Chairman Clarence Ting, seeking the council’s support and assistance for the event.
Ting has expressed great pride that Sibu has been chosen to host such a distinguished international gathering and commended Lions International District 308-A2 as well as the Lions of Sibu for their dedication, hard work, and commitment in making the summit possible.
