KUCHING: Businessmen have contributed RM51,000 towards the proposed Nan Qiao Ji Gong Memorial project, moving the crowd-funded initiative closer to its RM500,000 target.

Kuching South Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, said about RM400,000 has been raised thus far.

The RM51,000 contribution by the Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI) was presented during a sponsorship ceremony here, as support continues to build for the development of the memorial dedicated to the Nanyang volunteer drivers and mechanics.

Wee said the contribution reflects strong community commitment towards preserving historical heritage and ensuring important wartime stories are not forgotten.

He said many are still unfamiliar with the sacrifices made by the Nanyang volunteer drivers and mechanics despite their crucial role during wartime operations.

“During one of the darkest periods in history, these men travelled dangerous roads, carried vital supplies, and repaired broken vehicles under extreme conditions, and many never made it home.

“They were not in the spotlight and did not seek recognition, but their courage and sacrifice made a real difference,” he said.

Wee said the memorial will serve as both a tribute and an educational space aimed at passing these stories on to younger generations.

“It will honour these unsung heroes, educate our younger generation, and strengthen understanding of our shared history between Sarawak, Malaysia, and China,” he said.

The memorial will be located at a park under the Kuching South City Council, near the upcoming City of Gastronomy and swimming pool development.

An open tender has been called, with construction expected to begin as early as next month.

Wee said the initiative is also part of broader efforts to strengthen heritage tourism by linking key historical sites, including Batu Lintang and the Pending surrender point.

President of the Sarawak Arts and Cultural Research Institute, Datuk David Teng, said the memorial carries a wider message on peace and humanity, particularly in reflecting on the consequences of war.

“War is bad for everybody. This memorial should remind future generations not to resort to war and to value peace,” he said.

KCGCCI Secretary General, Datuk Jonathan Chai, said the monument will help preserve historical memory while encouraging younger generations to appreciate peace and sacrifice.

Also in attendance was Deputy Mayor, Zaid Bin Suhaili.

Wee speaks at the presentation ceremony at Kuching South City Hall.
