KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) has made history by clinching the National Best Trade Union Award (Public Sector), marking its first win in six decades.

STU President Kullin Djayang described the achievement as a proud and defining moment, saying the recognition reflects the union’s long-standing commitment, credibility and integrity in championing the welfare of teachers in Sarawak.

He said the award is a testament to the collective efforts of its leadership, members and supporters over the years.

“This victory belongs to all of you. It proves that STU is a mature, strong, and respected organisation at the highest levels nationally and across Southeast Asia.

“However, this award also comes with greater responsibility, demanding even stronger commitment and effort from all STU leaders,” he said in a statement on today (May 2).

The award was presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the National Labour Day celebration on May 1 at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur.

Kullin said the recognition is the most meaningful gift in conjunction with STU’s 60th anniversary, underscoring the union’s maturity and standing as a respected organisation at both national and regional levels.

He also expressed appreciation to former leaders, current top leadership, all committee members, all permanent staff of STU, and the unwavering support of all members and educators.

“We also extend our sincere thanks to the Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli along with all officers in the State Education Department (JPNS), District Education Offices (PPD), and school management teams who have greatly supported STU in becoming a distinguished union in the country.

“We hope that STU will continue to grow stronger and remain committed to safeguarding the welfare of teachers, especially in Sarawak, and we call on all teachers to join STU,” he said.
