SERIAN: A total 31 cases that fall under indexed crimes were recorded in this district as of April this year, down slightly from 32 cases during the same period last year.

Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak said the overall situation in Serian remains under control despite ongoing development and population growth.

He said violent crime increased marginally to five cases from four previously, driven by a rise in rape cases to four compared to one case last year.

“Property crime declined to 26 cases from 28, mainly due to a reduction in theft cases to 17 from 19.

“We believe crime prevention efforts will be more effective when the community plays its role as the eyes and ears of the police,” he said.

He said this after officiating the PDRM Sarawak Contingent Townhall Discussion 2026 at the Serian Conference Centre here today (May 9).

Saifullizan stressed that crime prevention should begin at home, particularly in addressing issues such as gambling and drug abuse, with parents encouraged to monitor their children’s activities.

At the same time, he warned the public to remain vigilant against online scams, including Macau scams, investment fraud and non-existent loan schemes.

“These online scams often involve significant financial losses and can affect anyone regardless of background,” he said.

He assured that police will continue to intensify operations and prevention campaigns to ensure the safety and security of the district.
