SIBU: The Sibu Esports Championship 2026 is set to bring up to 64 teams together at RH Hotel on Sept 26 and 27, with RM15,000 in cash prizes at stake.

Held in conjunction with TechUnity 2026, the championship is organised by the Sibu Divisional Tourism Task Group (DTTG) in collaboration with the Sibu District E-Sports Club (SDEC).

DTTG Sibu secretary Maria Nadja said the tournament aimed to provide a competitive platform for esports players while supporting the development of the esports ecosystem among youths in Sibu and the central region of Sarawak.

“It will bring together players, esports enthusiasts, technology industry representatives and the local community in a competitive and structured tournament environment,” she said when representing Sibu Resident Supri Awang Said at a press conference today (Sept 21).

The two-day championship will feature Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) and PUBG MOBILE, with organisers targeting 32 teams for each title.

Beyond competition, the championship is intended to provide players with valuable tournament experience while helping them develop skills in strategy, communication, stress management and teamwork.

Maria added that a structured competition could also provide a pathway for new players to gain exposure to esports at a more competitive level.

With participation targeted at up to 64 teams, the championship is expected to bring together a sizeable esports community over the two-day event.

The tournament forms part of TechUnity 2026, which will also take place at RH Hotel on the same dates.

The combination of technology, digital innovation, esports, community activities, competition, industry networking and youth talent development is expected to enhance the appeal of TechUnity 2026, particularly among young people and technology enthusiasts.

“With participation expected to reach 64 teams across two major games, namely Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and PUBG MOBILE, we hope this championship can provide a quality tournament experience to all participants,” she said.

She added that hosting the championship alongside TechUnity 2026 would bring together technology, innovation, the digital industry and esports on a single platform for the community.

The event is also expected to contribute towards strengthening Sibu’s profile as a location for technology and esports activities in the central region of Sarawak.

Among those present at the press conference was SDEC vice president Terence Tan.
