KUCHING: Manchester United were forced to settle for a frustrating 0-0 draw against Sunderland on Saturday, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens producing several crucial saves to preserve a clean sheet for Michael Carrick’s side at the Stadium of Light in England, United Kingdom.
Fresh off securing Champions League football with victory over Liverpool last weekend, United arrived looking to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
But despite controlling possession for large periods, the visitors struggled to find their usual cutting edge in the final third.
The absence of Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko was noticeable. Casemiro missed the match after picking up a knock, while Sesko remained sidelined after being forced off during the win over Liverpool.
United still carved out openings, but the final touch often failed to arrive.
Lammens was called into action several times and responded well, making key interventions to deny Sunderland whenever the hosts threatened to punish United on the counter.
There were moments where Carrick’s men moved the ball sharply and pinned Sunderland deep, yet the breakthrough never came.
The stalemate also marked the first time since November that United failed to score in a Premier League match.
For Sunderland, the point was built on discipline and organisation.
For United, it was a night where possession and control ultimately counted for little.
