MIRI: The construction of the Marina Bridge in Miri Division is scheduled to begin this May and is expected to be completed by May 2029.

The project will enter its implementation phase as one of the key initiatives to strengthen connectivity in the Miri Division, improve road user mobility, and support the development of safe, sustainable and high-quality infrastructure.

Earlier, the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak’s Miri Division held a kick-off meeting to coordinate the implementation of the proposed Marina Bridge project.

The session, held at the JKR Miri Division office, was chaired by Miri Divisional Engineer, Stephen Ung Neng Hui, and attended by representatives from the consultant team, contractors and relevant agencies.

The meeting aimed to ensure comprehensive early coordination of the project, covering aspects such as scope of work, technical planning, implementation schedule, compliance with specifications, site requirements, and the commitment of all parties involved.

Through this session, PWD Sarawak emphasised the importance of integrated collaboration among agencies, consultants and contractors to ensure the project is executed systematically, efficiently, with quality, and within the stipulated timeframe.

Once completed, the Marina Bridge is expected to enhance transportation networks, improve connectivity in Miri and its surrounding areas, and contribute to community mobility, economic growth and overall public well-being.

“PWD Sarawak remains committed to ensuring the project is implemented in an orderly and efficient manner, in compliance with established standards for the benefit of the public,”   it  said in a statement posted on its Facebook page today (May 10).

The Marina Bridge will connect the city centre to Kampung Pulau Melayu and is expected to reduce travel time from about 25 minutes to just five.

The cable-stayed bridge will stand 60 feet high and feature a design similar to the Bintulu-Jepak Bridge, which is known for its iconic appearance and has been nicknamed the ‘San Francisco Bridge’ of Malaysia.

Its design includes a long elevated approach road starting from Pulau Melayu, rising to its peak height before descending into the Marina area, forming a distinctive urban structure intended to enhance Miri’s visual and scenic landscape.
