MIRI: Women walking about at several commercial centres here received chrysanthemums in conjunction with Mother’s Day on Sunday.

The community appreciation initiative also saw Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin joining in the effort with women’s groups.

The Senadin assemblyman took part in two flower distribution activities organised by the women members of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) beginning at Morsjaya Commercial Centre before moving to Permy Food Court and Permy Mall later in the morning.

Members of the public, particularly mothers, received chrysanthemums as a symbolic gesture of gratitude for their role within families and society.

Speaking during the event, Lee described mothers as the foundation of strong families and communities, saying their sacrifices and dedication often went beyond measure.

“Mother’s Day is an important occasion for us to recognise and appreciate the unconditional love, sacrifices and commitment shown by mothers in raising families and nurturing future generations,” he said.

He added that while the flower distribution was modest in scale, it reflected a wider message of appreciation and social unity.

“Mothers are the backbone of every family. Their contributions can never truly be repaid, but programmes like this allow us to express our gratitude and remind them that they are valued and respected,” he said.

The first programme, organised by the SUPP Riam Sub-Branch Women Section, began at about 8am at Morsjaya Commercial Centre, where party members greeted shoppers and traders with flowers and Mother’s Day wishes.

An hour later, Lee joined members of the SUPP Senadin Women Section for a second distribution activity at Permy Food Court and Permy Mall, drawing warm responses from visitors and business operators.

Lee also praised the efforts of both women’s sections for continuing to organise grassroots initiatives aimed at strengthening engagement with the local community.

He said such programmes played an important role in fostering social cohesion and promoting a caring spirit among the people.

“These community-based activities may appear simple, but they help strengthen ties among residents and encourage a culture of compassion, respect and togetherness,” he said.

He added that celebrations such as Mother’s Day also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the often unseen contributions made by women in balancing responsibilities at home, at work and within the wider community.
