MIRI: Sarawak is intensifying efforts to modernise its agricultural sector through greater exposure to technology-driven farming practices and inter-state collaboration, with 40 farmers from Miri departing today for a five-day agricultural study tour across Malaya.
The delegation, led by farmer representative Chin Bui Min, will participate in the 2026 National Farmers Exchange Session and Agricultural Technology Study Tour, covering key agricultural hubs in Perak, Penang and Cameron Highlands.
The send-off ceremony was held at Miri Airport this morning on behalf of Sarawak Transport Minister Lee Kim Shin, who was represented by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Senadin secretary Jeffrey Phang Siaw Foong.
In a speech delivered on the minister’s behalf, Lee said the programme reflected the state’s commitment to equip local farmers with practical knowledge and exposure to modern agricultural systems in order to improve productivity and long-term sustainability.
He said the exchange session would allow participants to observe innovative farming techniques, effective plantation management systems and the adoption of modern agricultural technologies already practised in other parts of the country.
“The main objective of this exchange is to broaden knowledge, strengthen networking and learn from successful agricultural models in other parts of the country,” he said.
He stressed that such exposure was increasingly important as the agricultural industry faced mounting pressure to improve efficiency, crop quality and competitiveness amid changing market demands and technological advancement.
Before officially flagging off the delegation, Lee wished all participants a safe journey and a productive learning experience.
The programme is expected to include site visits, knowledge-sharing sessions and direct engagement with agricultural operators and technology practitioners in Malaya.
