SIMUNJAN: Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) and Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) are intensifying environmental restoration efforts after planting 2,500 indigenous tree seedlings at Sabal Forest Reserve today (May 22).

The tree-planting programme gathered 170 participants comprising employees from SEB’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), SEB Power, and Strategy and Corporate Development divisions.

Senior Vice-President of HSSE SEB, Alvin Lim, said the programme reflected continued corporate commitment towards sustainability and ecosystem restoration across Sarawak.

“The collaboration with FDS strengthened long-term conservation initiatives while encouraging stronger participation from communities, government agencies and corporate organisation statewide,” he said.

The seedlings planted consisted of valuable indigenous species, including Meranti, Kapur, Selangan, Keruing and Engkabang, supporting biodiversity conservation within protected forest ecosystems.

“The initiative marked the third collaborative programme organised by both organisations at Sabal Forest Reserve during 2026 under SEB’s Corporate-Level Integrated 10-Year Tree-Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021-2030,” he added.

Through the Corporate-Level Integrated 10-Year Tree-Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021–2030, both organisations continued supporting large-scale landscape rehabilitation efforts throughout Sarawak.

FDS’ Senior Research Officer from the Forest Restoration and Industrial Forest Division, Biha Razali, highlighted the programme’s importance towards sustainable forest management objectives.

He asserted that ongoing restoration activities contributed significantly towards rehabilitating degraded forest areas while fortifying environmental awareness among participants and surrounding local communities.

With the activities completed successfully, nearly 5,000 indigenous high-value tree seedlings have been planted collectively by both organisations at Sabal Forest Reserve this year.

The programme also supported implementation of the Greening Sarawak Campaign, which promotes environmental stewardship, biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management throughout the state.

Participants included officers from government agencies, corporate representatives and nearby residents, reflecting broad community involvement supporting conservation and forest restoration initiatives in Sarawak.

The continued partnership between SEB and FDS demonstrated their shared commitment towards preserving natural ecosystems through coordinated long-term forest restoration programmes.
