SIBU: The Waste to Wealth programme organised by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) at the Sibujaya Library on Saturday (May 23) received an encouraging response from the public.

According to SRDC Environment and Public Health Standing Committee chairman Kevin Lau Kor Jie, the initiative is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to raise public awareness on environmental protection.

“We are especially pleased to see many members of the public coming forward to return used cooking oil.

“Proper disposal and recycling of used cooking oil are important in preventing environmental pollution while also discouraging the unsafe practice of reusing cooking oil, which may affect food safety and public health,” he said.

Emphasising that the council would continue organising the meaningful programme, Lau expressed his sincere appreciation to the public for their strong support.

“We hope more people will continue to come forward with their used cooking oil and recyclable items, turning waste into economic value while contributing towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment,” added Lau, who is also the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief.

It was learnt that a total of 2,308 kilograms of used cooking oil was collected during the programme.
