KUCHING: An express bus driver tested positive for ketum during an integrated enforcement operation at a bus terminal here on Sunday (May 24).
The screening was carried out by the Sarawak Road Transport Department (RTD) together with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) as part of inspections on express bus drivers.
“The driver was confirmed positive for ketum following a urine screening test conducted by AADK, with further action taken by the relevant authorities under existing laws.
“Sarawak RTD views any form of substance abuse among public service vehicle drivers seriously, as it poses a major risk to passengers and other road users,” it said in a statement.
The department said the operation also involved technical inspections and safety monitoring of express buses at the terminal.
It added that the joint operation reflected the continued commitment of enforcement agencies to ensure only fit, competent and drug-free drivers are allowed to operate public transport vehicles.
The department also expressed appreciation to AADK for its cooperation in carrying out the enforcement and screening operation, especially during the festive season and school holidays.
