MIRI: The Miri Mayfest Carnival 2026 drew strong public support over five days, with Mayor Adam Yii describing the event as a reflection of the city’s growing unity, civic engagement and community spirit.

Held from May 20 to 24 in conjunction with the 21st anniversary celebration of Miri City Hall, the carnival featured cultural performances, exhibitions, competitions, artisan showcases, health initiatives and family-oriented activities.

Speaking during the 5th Ordinary Meeting of the Miri City Council on Tuesday, Yii said the programme demonstrated the collaborative spirit among residents, agencies and stakeholders in making Miri a more vibrant and people-centric city.

“The encouraging response from the public throughout the carnival reflects the strong sense of togetherness and community participation among the people,” he said.

“This celebration was not only about commemorating the 21st anniversary of Miri City Hall, but also about strengthening public engagement and promoting inclusivity through meaningful activities for all age groups.”

One of the biggest attractions during the carnival was the live screening of the final football match between Kuching City FC and Johor Darul Ta’zim F.C., which attracted nearly 1,000 spectators and created a lively atmosphere of sportsmanship and unity.

The five-day event also introduced integrated service counters involving various City Hall divisions and sections to improve accessibility and delivery of municipal services to the public.

Yii said the initiative formed part of the council’s ongoing efforts to strengthen efficient and customer-friendly service delivery in line with the Miri SMART City agenda.

Special incentives were also introduced during the carnival to encourage assessment tax payments while raising public awareness on the importance of community responsibility in supporting municipal services and public facilities.

The carnival recorded an average attendance of about 100 visitors daily, with organisers describing the overall response as encouraging.

Meanwhile, the mayor announced that the sixth monthly Meet-the-People Session for 2026 is scheduled to be held on June 5 at Emart Tudan from 10am to 11am, subject to confirmation.

Separately, the Miri City Hall Rooftop recorded 883 visitors in April this year, slightly lower than the previous month.

The rooftop remains open daily, including public holidays, from 5pm to 7pm.
