SARATOK: Police have arrested a 22-year-old local man to assist in an investigation after a 16-year-old schoolgirl was found to be 35 weeks pregnant in Kabong.

Saratok police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said the case came to light after the teenager sought treatment at a health clinic on Friday (May 22) after complaining of swollen legs and not having had her menstrual cycle for several months.

“A medical examination later found the Form Five student was 35 weeks pregnant.

“The doctor on duty subsequently lodged a police report.

“Initial investigations found the girl had allegedly been in a relationship with the suspect for about a year after they became acquainted through Facebook,” he said in a statement.

Police investigations also found the suspect had allegedly engaged in sexual relations with the teenager on more than one occasion in Kabong.

The suspect was later arrested and is being held at the Saratok police lock-up pending a remand application.

The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code.
