KUCHING: National mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei has shared an emotional message after a knee injury forced her and partner Chen Tang Jie to retire from their Singapore Open quarter-final earlier today (May 29).

The Malaysian pair were leading India’s Dhruv Kapila–Tanisha Crasto 18–16 in the opening game when Ee Wei was unable to continue, bringing an abrupt end to one of Malaysia’s strongest title hopes in the tournament.

Describing the incident as one of the most painful moments of her career, Ee Wei admitted she was left heartbroken by the outcome.

“Things have happened, and injuries are every athlete’s biggest fear.

“I’ve given everything I could on court, but my knee just couldn’t allow me to continue. It’s my first time retiring in the middle of a match, and it hurts more than I can truly put into words,” she said in a social media post.

The 25-year-old said the setback has been difficult not only for herself, but also for those closest to her.

“This is a really tough moment for me, my team, and my family.

“I’m now taking some time to rest while waiting for my scan and MRI results. We are hoping and praying for the best,” she added.

The injury also drew an emotional response from Tang Jie, who revealed that Ee Wei had initially tried to continue despite the pain.

Speaking to BWF after the match, Tang Jie said the injury occurred when the score was tied at 15-all.

“She said at 15-same her knee twisted. She still wanted to try to play, but every time her foot touched the floor, she felt pain.

“I don’t know what she felt, but an injury is not something any player wants.

“I told her that the body is the priority. Don’t think about the match result or anything else,” he said.

Messages of support quickly flooded social media following Ee Wei’s update, with many fans expressing concern over the injury and wishing the national shuttler a speedy recovery.

“Ee Wei really fought till the end… only retired after she couldn’t take the pain anymore. Get well soon, Ee Wei,” wrote one supporter.

Another fan commented: “Hopefully Toh can recover soon and the injury is not serious.”

Others described the incident as heartbreaking, with many noting it was rare to see the usually composed Ee Wei visibly emotional on court.

Ee Wei also took the opportunity to thank supporters who had reached out following the incident.

“Thank you for all the messages and support,” she said.

The full extent of the injury remains unknown as the national shuttler awaits further medical assessment.

For now, the badminton community will be hoping for positive news as Ee Wei awaits her scan and MRI results and begins her road to recovery.
