KUCHING: Former World no.1 pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani stormed into the Indonesia Open semi-finals with a commanding 21-12, 21-10 victory over India’s Hariharan Amsakarunan and M.R. Arjun today, reaching their first BWF World Tour Super 1000 last four since capturing the China Open title in 2024.

As Malaysia’s sole remaining representatives in Jakarta, the national men’s doubles pair now stand two victories away from ending their wait for another Super 1000 crown.

The seventh seeds produced one of their most dominant performances of the tournament against the Indian pair, who had earlier knocked out fellow Malaysians Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai in the round of 16.

Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin wasted little time imposing themselves on the contest, dictating the pace through aggressive attacking play and sharp interceptions at the net.

The Malaysians repeatedly broke through the Indians’ defence, forcing errors and denying their opponents any opportunity to settle into rhythm.

Their relentless pressure paid off as they raced to a comfortable 21-12 victory in the opening game.

Any hopes of an Indian response were quickly extinguished in the second set.

Carrying the same intensity and discipline into the restart, Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin continued to pile on the pressure while maintaining control of the rallies.

With the advantage firmly in hand at the interval, the Malaysians tightened their grip on proceedings and steadily pulled away on the scoreboard.

The Indian pair struggled to find answers as Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin dictated play from start to finish.

The Malaysians eventually wrapped up the second game 21-10 to seal their place in the semi-finals in emphatic fashion.

The victory comes at a crucial time for Malaysia following the exits of women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, as well as mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, in the quarter-finals earlier in the day.

Pearly and Thinaah bowed out after a 20-22, 16-21 defeat to Japan’s Rui Hirokami and Sayaka Hobara, while Soon Huat and Shevon suffered a heartbreaking 21-15, 18-21, 20-22 loss to France’s Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue.

With the rest of the Malaysian challenge now over, the spotlight turns squarely to Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin as they continue their pursuit of Indonesia Open glory and a first Super 1000 title at Istora Senayan since their China Open triumph two years ago.
