KUCHING: The Social Welfare Department (JKM) is currently conducting an assessment process to determine a suitable guardian for the surviving twin infant in a case involving the death of a baby girl in Johor Bahru.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said the matter has been brought before the court to determine a Suitable and Eligible Person (OYLS), while JKM also has a list of qualified individuals who may be considered to care for the infant.
“We are still determining who the OYLS will be. Usually, the child will first be placed with family members. If that is not possible, the necessary procedures will be carried out.
“JKM has a list of individuals whom we consider suitable and eligible, but priority is given to the family,” she told reporters after officiating the ‘Pengenalan Program Sahabat PSSS YKN: Mahasiswa Prihatin’ and ‘Jejak Hijau: Selamatkan Pantai dan Laut Kita’ event at Kampung Trombol this morning.
She was commenting on a case involving a baby who died after allegedly being thrown out by her mother from the 10th floor of a People’s Housing Project (PPR) apartment in Johor Bahru on May 22.
Nancy said the woman was in her postpartum confinement period and therefore requires support from various parties during this difficult time.
She added that JKM would also provide counselling services to the woman and deploy officers to assist on the ground.
“We will help from the counselling aspect. It is our responsibility to obtain medical opinions regarding the mother’s condition and what she is going through,” she said.
