KUCHING: Kuching Chess Association (PCBK) has received a RM5,000 contribution from Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin to support chess development programmes in the division.

The contribution was presented during a courtesy visit by PCBK representatives to the N.12 Kota Sentosa Service Centre on Saturday (June 6).

Wilfred said chess remains an important platform for developing strategic thinking, discipline, concentration and leadership qualities among young people.

He also stressed the importance of identifying and nurturing local talent from a young age, expressing hope that Sarawak would continue strengthening its player development pathway with the long-term aim of achieving greater success at future Malaysia Games (SUKMA).

“Chess is a healthy and educational activity that helps develop strategic thinking, discipline, concentration and leadership qualities among youths.

“It is important that we continue identifying and nurturing local talents from a young age while strengthening player development efforts for the future,” he said.

PCBK president, Chuang Kuang Hong, welcomed the contribution, saying it would help the association expand its activities and development programmes in Kuching.

“The contribution will assist PCBK in organising more chess activities, tournaments and development programmes for players of various age groups in Kuching.

“We remain committed to promoting community engagement, talent development and the growth of chess in Kuching and Sarawak,” he said.

Chuang added that the association would continue organising programmes within its means to provide players with opportunities to compete, develop their skills and contribute to the growth of the sport in the state.
