MONTE CARLO: Kimi Antonelli became the youngest winner of the Monaco Grand Prix when he held off Lewis Hamilton in a race reduced to a 10-lap dash after stewards halted cars to inspect Turn 19 for a “track break-up”.

The race was suspended for 40 minutes with 10 laps to go after Lance Stroll and Charles Leclerc crashed on that corner.

At the time, 19-year-old Italian Antonelli was leading in his Mercedes with Hamilton second. They stayed in that order with Frenchman Isack Hadjar finishing a provisional third as stewards sorted through a host of potential penalties.

Earlier, the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix was suspended for an indefinite period with 10 laps to go on due to the condition of the asphalt on Sunday.

With the race under safety car conditions following a crash by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, race control decided to wave the red flag in order to inspect the surface in that area.

A strip of asphalt on the inside of Turn 19 appeared to be heavily damaged, and the organisers, in collaboration with race control, were looking for a solution to repair the track and allow the race to be completed.

At the moment of the suspension, Italian driver Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), the world championship leader, was heading the race ahead of Britain’s Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), Frenchman Isack Hadjar (Red Bull), and another Briton, George Russell (Mercedes). – AFP
