KUCHING: Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) estimates its golf course is about 70 per cent ready as preparations continue ahead of the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

KGS club captain, Roland Phang, said further improvements are planned to bring the course closer to the standard the club hopes to achieve for future major competitions.

“Our golf course is already about 60 to 70 per cent where we want it to be. We just need another 20 to 30 per cent improvement to make it even better,” he said when contacted recently.

Roland said course conditions remain a priority, with the club having established a grass nursery to support future turf replacement and maintenance works.

Apart from course improvements, KGS is also looking at upgrading several facilities, including its changing rooms and sections of the driving range.

“The changing rooms are already around 40 years old, so we are looking at improving them. There are also some parts of the driving range that can be upgraded,” he said.

To strengthen preparations, Roland said the club had appointed a new course superintendent to oversee course management and coordinate future improvement works.

He added that KGS already possesses much of the infrastructure required to support a major sporting event.

“We have 140 buggies. Our buggies are only about three or four years old, so they are still relatively new,” he said.

Roland noted that while golfers competing at major tournaments typically walk the course, the buggies would remain available for officials, media personnel and support staff.

KGS previously hosted the golf competition during SUKMA Sarawak 2024, with Roland expressing confidence in the club’s ability to deliver should it be selected to host another major multi-sport event.

Golf is among the sports expected to feature when Sarawak hosts the 2027 SEA Games, with venue preparations continuing statewide ahead of the biennial regional event.
