KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) will jointly organise a community health programme at Kenyalang Park Market on June 14 to promote preventive healthcare and improve access to health services.
The programme, themed ‘Working Together for a Healthier Community’, will run from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon, and offer a range of health-related services for the public.
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative reflects the council’s commitment to building a healthy and caring city by bringing essential healthcare services closer to residents.
“Good health is fundamental to the well-being of our residents and an important component of a liveable city. Through collaborations with healthcare institutions and community partners, MBKS strives to encourage a culture of preventive healthcare,” he said at a press conference today (June 11).
Among the services available are free health screenings, including blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure checks.
Free Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments will also be provided to the first 200 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Participants can also undergo an ‘InBody’ body composition analysis for RM10, which includes a complimentary consultation with a qualified dietitian.
The programme will further feature free physiotherapy consultations, where participants can learn stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and prevent injuries.
Information on home care services will also be available, particularly for senior citizens, individuals recovering from illness, and families caring for loved ones at home.
Wee emphasised the importance of regular health screenings, noting that chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases often develop without noticeable symptoms.
“A simple health check today can help prevent serious health complications tomorrow,” he said.
He added that the programme supports MBKS’ aspiration of becoming an age-friendly city by enabling older persons to access health information and services in a familiar community setting.
The mayor also encouraged hawkers, traders and market workers to take advantage of the programme, as its location at Kenyalang Park Market makes healthcare services more accessible without disrupting their daily business activities.
Members of the public are invited to attend and participate in the programme.
