KUCHING: A Teochew cultural film depicting the struggles and sacrifices of early Chinese migrants will be screened for the public in Kuching from June 17 to 21 through a complimentary ticket programme organised by the Kuching Teochew Association and Kuching Teo Khiaw Club.

According to a press release, A Love Letter to Grandma tells the story of Teochew ancestors who journeyed to Southeast Asia in search of a better life, capturing themes of separation, family bonds, perseverance and cultural heritage through qiaopi remittance letters.

The initiative is part of a nationwide screening organised by the Federation of Teochew Associations Malaysia, with Teochew associations across the country offering complimentary tickets to community members and the public.

In Kuching, the association will hold a private screening at 3pm on June 17 at the cinema on the fourth floor of The Spring Shopping Mall, with all 352 tickets fully distributed to its honorary advisors, honorary presidents, advisors, Youth and Women’s Sections, members and fellow Teochew community members.

The private screening is fully sponsored by the association’s honorary president and Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How.

Meanwhile, the Kuching Teochew Association and Kuching Teo Khiaw Club have received sponsorship of 1,000 tickets from honorary advisor Goh for public screenings from June 17 to 21, with each screening beginning at 7.30pm.

Members of the public may collect complimentary tickets at the cinema entrance from 6.30pm daily on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of 200 tickets will be distributed each evening, limited to one ticket per person while stocks last.

Produced in the Chaoshan region, the film features local amateur actors and has garnered widespread praise for its emotional portrayal of migration, resilience and the enduring ties between families separated by distance.

“The complimentary screenings aim to honour the hardships endured by earlier generations who migrated overseas and help younger generations better understand the sacrifices, perseverance and resilience of their forefathers.

“It is hoped that the film will inspire today’s youth to cherish the present and strive towards a brighter future,” the organisers said.

For enquiries, the public may contact the Kuching Teochew Association office at 082-242457.
