KOTA SAMARAHAN: Fly infestations can be effectively controlled through proper cleanliness and food management practices, reducing the risk of disease transmission and associated healthcare costs.
Muara Tuang assemblyman, Datuk Idris Buang, said flies are often blamed for spreading diseases, but poor hygiene practices such as exposing food, improper waste disposal and unsanitary surroundings are the main factors contributing to fly breeding.
“Flies cannot be eradicated completely because they are part of the environment, but we can control their population by maintaining cleanliness and handling food properly,” he said when officiating at the 2026 Fly Control Campaign at Ferry Terminal Hawker Stalls today.
Idris urged traders and food operators to ensure food and beverages are properly covered and stored, while keeping their premises clean to minimise health risks.
He noted that fly-borne illnesses can result in significant costs, including medical treatment, medication, hospital visits and other related expenses.
“Maintaining cleanliness is not only about creating a pleasant environment but also about protecting public health and preventing unnecessary healthcare costs,” he said.
Earlier, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) Chairman, Abang Ismawi Abang Ali, said the campaign was organised under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government’s fly control initiative to improve hygiene standards in public areas, particularly food premises and business centres.
He said the programme includes cleanliness inspections, gotong-royong activities, health education programmes, installation of fly traps, and fly density studies aimed at reducing fly populations in high-risk areas.
Abang Ismawi said Ferry Terminal Hawker Stalls was selected as the venue due to its role as an active commercial centre frequented by the local community.
“I hope that the campaign would increase awareness among traders and the public on the importance of effective hygiene management in preventing fly breeding and disease transmission,” he said.
The campaign also involves collaboration between MPKS, government agencies, traders and local residents in promoting a cleaner and healthier environment in Kota Samarahan.
