KUCHING: Construction works for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) along Jalan Tun Jugah here are expected to intensify in stages until the end of this year, with motorists advised to anticipate heavier traffic congestion in affected areas.

Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd, the implementer, maintainer and operator of the KUTS project, said ongoing works include the construction of the elevated guideway for Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles and an ART station near the Simpang Tiga roundabout.

The elevated guideway works involve the construction of piers, pier caps and guideway beams.

Several sections of Jalan Tun Jugah have also been partially closed to facilitate the operation of heavy machinery and construction activities.

The affected stretch is particularly from the Jalan Tun Jugah-Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho-Jalan Song intersection towards the Simpang Tiga roundabout.

Sarawak Metro said road users should expect heavier traffic congestion in the area as construction activities progress.

Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys in advance and consider alternative routes where possible to avoid the affected areas.

Sarawak Metro also urged motorists travelling through the construction zone to exercise caution and comply with traffic management measures.

“Road users are urged to exercise caution, adhere to all traffic management measures, follow road signage and observe the designated speed limits when travelling through the construction zone,” it said.

The company said public announcements would continue to be issued from time to time to inform road users of road diversions, lane closures and other traffic management measures required for the construction works.

Members of the public seeking further information may contact the KUTS Hotline at 1300-88-5887 from Monday to Friday, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, except on public holidays.
