KUCHING: Sarawak’s emergence as a recognised “petro-electro state” is attracting growing interest from international scientists and researchers keen to explore collaboration opportunities in energy innovation and emerging technologies.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the recognition reflects Sarawak’s unique position as a state endowed with both abundant renewable energy resources and natural gas reserves, giving it a strategic advantage in the global energy transition.

He pointed out that only a handful of places worldwide have been accorded such recognition, underscoring Sarawak’s growing significance in the energy landscape.

“Energy has always been the foundation of industrialisation. The world moved from coal and steam engines to fossil fuels, and now towards renewable energy,” he said at the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Excellence and Service Awards ceremony here last night (June 19).

Abang Johari said Sarawak’s extensive renewable energy capacity, particularly through hydropower, coupled with its gas resources, places the state in a distinctive category.

He explained that while many Middle Eastern countries are known as “petro-states” due to their oil and gas wealth, and countries such as Japan and China are often regarded as “electro-states” because of their reliance on electricity-driven economies, Sarawak possesses characteristics of both.

“That is what makes Sarawak unique. We have the advantage of being both a petro-state and an electro-state,” he said.

He said the recognition has heightened international interest in Sarawak, with scientists and technology experts from abroad increasingly looking at the state as a potential hub for research, innovation and knowledge exchange.

“We are receiving scientists from overseas who are interested in sharing their expertise and exploring new technologies with us,” he said.

At the same time, he said Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability and clean energy development has further strengthened its appeal as a destination for future-focused industries.

He reiterated that Sarawak remains committed to advancing green energy initiatives as part of its long-term strategy to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

“We are focusing on clean and green energy because we want to sustain a clean environment,” he said.
