KUCHING: Access to quality healthcare services in rural and remote Sarawak is set to receive a major boost following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) for the construction of the Bakun-Murum Health Clinic in Belaga.

Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, witnessed the signing ceremony at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Putrajaya recently.

In a Facebook post, the ministry said the MoU formalises a corporate social responsibility (CSR) contribution from SEB for the construction of a Type 6-7 Health Clinic complete with four units of staff quarters and a supporting building block.

“The initiative reflects a continuous commitment to strengthening access to quality healthcare services, particularly for communities in rural and remote areas,” the ministry said.

The ministry was represented by its Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad, while SEB was represented by SEB Power Sdn Bhd’s Chief Executive Officer, Bunyak Lunyong.

According to the ministry, the project will be developed in Belaga, Kapit Division, and is expected to take 24 months to complete before being handed over to MOH for operations and the delivery of healthcare services to the local community.

The new facility is expected to enhance healthcare accessibility for residents in the Bakun-Murum area, which is among the state’s remote regions where access to medical services remains a key priority under ongoing efforts to improve rural healthcare infrastructure.

The collaboration also highlights the role of public-private partnerships in supporting the government’s efforts to expand healthcare facilities and improve service delivery, particularly in underserved communities.

Also present at the signing ceremony were Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang and others.
