KUCHING: The spirit of unity and mutual respect that has long defined Sarawak society must continue to be preserved and strengthened for future generations, Sarawakians have been reminded.
Delivering a message on behalf of Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim during the ‘Ngiling Bidai 2026’ celebration organised by PBB Ranting Taman Desa Wira Lot in Batu Kawa today (June 20), Affry Tony said unity remains one of Sarawak’s most valuable assets in navigating global uncertainties and social challenges.
“We celebrate Gawai together. We visit one another during Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Aidiladha, Christmas and Chinese New Year. When a neighbour is in need, we lend a helping hand without asking about race or religion. This is the true identity of a Sarawakian,” he said.
Affry, who is also Deputy Chairman of PBB Batu Kawa, said Sarawak’s diversity has long been a source of strength, with communities continuing to live together in mutual respect and understanding.
He said celebrations such as ‘Ngiling Bidai’ not only mark the close of the Gawai season but also strengthen ties among families, neighbours and communities while preserving cultural traditions.
“Events such as this bring families, neighbours and communities together. They strengthen the spirit of unity that forms the foundation of peace and harmony in Sarawak,” he said.
Ahmad said Sarawakians must continue placing harmony, stability and the state’s future above differences in opinion and political views.
“We do not want hatred, extremism or any elements that divide communities that have lived together peacefully for generations,” he said, noting that Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu’s (PBB) strength lies in its grassroots network and close ties with local communities.
Also present were Datin Ingrid Barcenas Caro, grassroots leaders of PBB Batu Kawa, community leaders, and local residents.
