KUCHING: Chemists have been urged to play a more proactive role in supporting Sarawak’s green economy agenda and its aspiration to achieve net-zero carbon emissions through scientific expertise and innovation that can drive sustainable development in the state.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the role of chemists is becoming increasingly important as Sarawak intensifies its exploration of green technologies.

“This includes the development of the hydrogen economy as well as various sustainability initiatives rooted in science and innovation,” he said when officiating the Chemistry Night in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) Sarawak Branch here last night (June 19).

The programme brought together more than 200 members and invited guests to celebrate four decades of the institution’s contributions to the development of the chemistry profession in Sarawak.

Dr Hazland also expressed appreciation for the achievements of the IKM Sarawak Branch, which has grown from just 25 pioneer members at its establishment in 1986 to more than 500 members today.

He described the growth as evidence of the scientific community’s continued commitment to strengthening the field of chemistry and contributing to the development of the state and the country.

Beyond celebrating professional excellence, the event also highlighted IKM Sarawak’s commitment to social responsibility through the presentation of aromatherapy candles produced by the community of Kampung Baru, Samarahan as souvenir gifts.

The initiative is part of the UniMADANI ‘Waste to Wealth’ project led by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) with support from the Ministry of Finance Malaysia, aimed at empowering communities through green innovation and the circular economy.

Meanwhile, Dr Hazland also highlighted the upcoming 51st IUPAC World Polymer Congress (MACRO 2026), which will take place at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in July 2026.

He said the hosting of the prestigious international conference, themed ‘New Polymers and Innovative Materials for a Sustainable Future’, reflects global recognition of Sarawak as a hub for research, innovation, and sustainable technology development.
