KUCHING: Sarawak is confident that negotiations on an agreement between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) are progressing positively and could be commercially finalised in the near future.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the optimism was in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent statement that several key issues in the negotiations had already been resolved.
“We believe these negotiations and agreements can, God willing, be achieved commercially between PETROS and PETRONAS. We hope for the best,” she said when met by reporters after the Opening Ceremony and Forum of International Archives Week 2026 at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak here today (June22).
Elaborating further, she said the developments highlighted by Anwar indicated encouraging progress in the negotiations.
“We just have to wait for the next announcement. It may not be long now, perhaps in the near future. As soon as possible, God willing,” she said.
When asked whether the agreement could be finalised this year, she did not dismiss the possibility.
“Yes, possibly… as soon as possible, God willing,” she added.
Yesterday, Anwar said the agreement between PETRONAS and PETROS is expected to be finalised soon after both parties reach consensus on several key matters under negotiation.
He said the progress was achieved through a series of ongoing discussions between the federal and state government aimed at finding a solution that would benefit all parties.
“At least several key issues have been agreed upon, and I hope that before long we will be able to finalise the agreement between PETRONAS and PETROS,” he said.
