KUCHING: Sarawak’s abundant energy resources and growing green energy capacity give the state a competitive advantage in attracting energy-intensive industries.

Ambassador of France to Malaysia, Marc Abensour, said Sarawak’s energy transition agenda was helping the state develop capabilities across a range of industrial sectors.

“We see that Sarawak has this agenda to mobilise its assets, specifically on energy transition, to develop capabilities here in different industrial sectors.

“This is why, for instance, I mentioned semiconductors, but I would say every kind of industry which has a demand for high consumption of energy,” he told reporters during a press conference after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.

Abensour said Sarawak’s strengths lay in its established oil and gas industry, hydropower resources, and ongoing efforts to expand green energy generation.

He said access to green energy had become an increasingly important consideration for industries seeking to comply with environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.

“That’s a comparative advantage of Sarawak because of the oil and gas activity, but also the hydropower and all the different projects to develop green energy,” he said.

Abensour said France believed Sarawak had significant strengths that could be further developed through collaboration with French industries, research institutions and universities.

“We think that clearly Sarawak has a lot of assets to be mobilised in that perspective.

“The French actors, not only the French enterprises, but also the French actors for research and development, for higher education, and also what we call the startup communities, can contribute to this agenda,” he added.
