KUCHING: Night-time walks in Kampung Malaysia Jaya and Kampung Tunku are now safer and more welcoming after the installation of 178 units of Smart LED street lighting.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the installations cost a total of RM475,882.00, covering works carried out in both locations under the Smart LED street lighting project.
She said the project, implemented by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), forms part of the ongoing beautification project and is aligned with efforts to strengthen smart city development in Kuching.
“The initiative focuses on enhancing safety, comfort and overall community well-being through the use of modern and efficient lighting technology,” she told reporters after officiating the Kampung Malaysia Jaya and Kampung Tunku Smart LED street lighting launch at Kampung Malaysia Jaya Multipurpose Hall on Sunday (Jun 28).
Sharifah, who is also the Samariang assemblywoman, said the project reflects continuous commitment from DBKU in delivering development to local communities, adding that it is the first smart street lighting initiative implemented in the Samariang area.

“It is something we have long hoped for and it is an achievement that I fully support and encourage.
“This reflects the Premier’s aspiration that development must be smart and technology-driven, and we are responding to that vision through the implementation of LED lighting systems.
“It is also in line with the aspiration to make Kuching a smarter, safer, more sustainable and more liveable city for all,” she said.
For the record, Kampung Malaysia Jaya received 68 units of Smart LED streetlights with a total cost of RM182,942.00, while Kampung Tunku was equipped with 110 units costing RM292,940.00.
The Smart LED system features real-time online monitoring that improves the efficiency of inspection, maintenance and repair works while enabling earlier fault detection and reducing complaints.
It also includes an integrated platform that analyses lighting performance, energy use and faults, along with remote control functions that allow brightness adjustment and online switching of streetlights according to operational needs.
