KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Samarahan Food and Cultural Festival plays an important role in strengthening unity and fostering a sense of belonging among residents as Kota Samarahan continues to grow.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian described the annual event as more than a celebration of food and culture, saying it also contributes to Sarawak’s nation-building efforts by bringing together people from different backgrounds.

“It is a way of Sarawak nation-building. Everyone comes together regardless of race or background to share their food, talents and creativity,” he said during his speech at the festival held at the MPKS Tamu Market site in Desa Ilmu on Thursday (Jul 2).

Dr Sim noted that Kota Samarahan is home to about 30,000 university students, many of whom come from outside Sarawak, and said festivals such as this help them experience the local culture and integrate with the community.

“We want them to have a positive experience in Samarahan so that wherever they go in the future, they will remember Sarawak positively,” he said.

He added that a strong and inclusive community would support Samarahan’s continued development as a centre for education, healthcare and research, while also encouraging healthier lifestyles through activities organised alongside the festival, including a night run.

Dr Sim also called on the public to continue promoting positive values and unity, saying community-driven events remain an important platform for strengthening social cohesion and showcasing Sarawak’s multicultural identity.

Community engagement remains central to the festival.
