KUCHING: Angkatan Zaman Mansang Sarawak (AZAM) enhances its legacy with a progressive approach under the ‘AZAM Progresif’ aspiration to meet today’s communication and societal needs.

The new direction of the organisation focuses on strengthening strategic communication, youth development, content digitalisation, and cross-sector collaboration to enhance community participation and support Sarawak’s development agenda.

Its new chairman, Datuk Ismawi Ismuni, stated that the theme for this year’s AZAM Gawai celebration, ‘Berindik Ka Adat, Bejalai Ka Pemansang’ (Rooted in Tradition, Advancing Towards Progress), carries a profound meaning: remaining steadfast in tradition and culture while moving forward towards progress and prosperity.

“An organisation that wishes to continue progressing must know its origins and its direction. We cannot forget the roots that shape the organisation’s identity and values.

“However, holding fast to our roots does not mean we stop changing; instead, we must continue to evolve with the times,” he said at the AZAM Gawai 2026 at the Dewan Seri Mahligai, here on Friday.

Commenting on the organisation’s direction, Ismawi emphasised that AZAM’s role as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) does more than just disseminate information – it builds understanding, instills confidence, and encourages active community participation.

“Communication today is no longer just about conveying information. Communication must build understanding.

“Understanding leads to trust, trust leads to participation, and participation gives rise to more inclusive and sustainable development,” he explained.

Following that, he said that the organisation’s success should not be measured solely by the number of programmess implemented, but rather by the extent to which the community understands, trusts and is willing to participate in shaping Sarawak’s future.

As the new chairman, Ismawi expressed his commitment to making AZAM a trusted and respected organisation while acting as a bridge by connecting the community, government, educational institutions, industry, and strategic partners.

He also emphasised the importance of attracting young people and young professionals to join AZAM, while continuing to instill a culture of integrity, professionalism, innovation, and a spirit of family within the organisation.
